Coleus: A Colorful Foliage Plant
Coleus is a plant known for its vibrant and colorful foliage. It is a low-maintenance plant that can add a pop of color to outdoor containers and garden beds. Here are some key points about Coleus:
- Varieties and Colors: Coleus comes in a wide range of colors, including green, yellow, pink, red, maroon, orange, chartreuse, burgundy, and purple. The leaves can be pointed, oval, or scalloped, with intricate veining or patterns.
- Growth Habit: Coleus plants can grow between 6 and 36 inches tall and often nearly as wide as they are tall. Some varieties have an upright growth habit, while others cascade beautifully, making them suitable for hanging baskets or window boxes.
- Sun and Shade Tolerance: Traditionally, Coleus were shade-loving plants, but some modern varieties are sun tolerant. They can thrive in both sun and shade, although it’s important to check with your garden nursery for the specific variety you have.
- Growing Coleus: Coleus can be easily started from seeds indoors about 10 weeks before the last frost date in your region. They prefer consistently moist, well-draining soil and should be protected from wind as their stems are fragile and can break easily.
- Cold Sensitivity: Coleus is very cold sensitive and will be the first to be affected by cold overnight lows. It is usually grown as an annual because it can’t handle even the slightest frost.
- Uses: Coleus can be massed in the landscape, used as a filler element in containers, or allowed to cascade in hanging baskets or window boxes. They are equally valuable in shade, where summer color is scarce.
Please note that Coleus is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, so it’s important to keep them away from these animals.
